SOMNIA-SPECIFIC QUESTIONS

1. Dreams are how Sleep chooses you. What might draw your character into Somnia— a wound, a wish, a weakness? Would they follow the dream, or run from it? Vi is made of wounds. Little cuts, bruises, old scars that have built up over the years, into the person Vi is now. But beneath all of that is in fact a wish: Vi just wants to have her family together again.

When Vi dreams, which is rare when it does happen, it's deep and regretful. Her family life, while it wasn't perfect, nothing is in Zaun, it was hers and it was loving. Her first family was dead by the time she found them, the second burned down before her eyes and at her own hand. She would give almost anything to have her life with them back, even if she knows to some degree that it can never happen. And when she wakes from these dreams it's often in a cold sweat she's unable to shake off. Only recently has she been getting better sleep (along with steady meals and generally higher standard of living) thanks to Caitlyn Kiramman.

So, it would come down to a wish for something unobtainable. Even in a dream it may not make sense, but Vi has seen enough happen in her life that she's willing to try the unorthodox to get results. Even a short moment of happiness is worth following down into whatever the dream holds.

2. Somnia is a slow unraveling—of worlds, and of selves. How does your character respond to fear, transformation, and losing control? Do they fight, adapt, collapse? A bit of unraveling might actually be a good thing. Vi's spent the last seven years so tightly wound that she's hardly changed. After so long in Stillwater Hold, fixated on the past, there's simply more of her than there was before but what's there is a brutal woman who is quick to leap into the fray and even quicker with her fists.

Fear is rather simple. Vi isn't often scared, she's the one who chases away the monsters. She can be scared for others but very rarely is Vi the one to feel fear when she's so often gearing up to punch whatever is scaring others. It's a matter of pushing down whatever she's feeling, doing what needs to be done. It's her duty as big sister to be the brave one, and that really hasn't changed much years later.

Transformation? Vi isn't afraid of a little change. Largely due to the fact that she herself is rather unchanging. Seven years in solitary confinement has left the teen who stared down threats much larger than her not so much changed as there's simply more of her now. The same rough exterior and the same soft heart that wanted her sister back like it hadn't been years since they fell apart. She will fight against it even if things as they are could never return to the way they were. She simply won't stop hoping for there to be something better.

The idea of losing control, whether it be of her life or her home, is where Vi falters, however. There's much that Vi has lost; her parents died in a vicious attack, her second family died in part due to her sister's efforts to help, the world she knew moved on and changed without her... all for the worst in her opinion. This is the downside of her unchanging nature; adapting isn't her strong suit. She takes blows to the face, whether they be physical or emotional.

It takes Caitlyn's urging, and a dangerous situation, to accept joining the enforcers. And when they were unable to reconcile Vi's hope for her sister and Caitlyn's grief, she was abandoned and fell into the worst state she's ever been in. A drunken pit fighter that pushed away anyone that still cared for her. Dragging herself from one day to the next until it was Jinx who pulled her out of it.

3. Connection is the only constant. What kind of bonds does your character form— fast and burning, slow and wary, deep and desperate? How might that shape their time in this world? Fast and burning brightly. Vi had a history of close friendships among pseudo siblings. Growing up in the Lanes was difficult, you needed others that had your back. And everyone needs family.

It's reasons like this why Vi in the current day wants to keep what's left of her family so close to her chest. As soon as she's out of prison, she's determined to find Powder again no matter the news of her current state. She doesn't believe it - she's unable to believe it - her sister is still in there, still Powder. She fights regularly with anyone that claims that it's only Jinx now and that she can never have her sister back. And she easily reconnects to old friends like Ekko despite all the time apart.

Even when she's pressed to join Caitlyn and confesses that Powder is gone, it's more of a painful way of coping, if anything. She could bear to fight her sister, think that maybe she could even kill her when they were in it. But actually doing it was never in question - she simply can't. Isha's sisterly devotion to Jinx reminds her of that.

It's ironically this that also temporarily breaks her close bond to Caitlyn. The two had fallen in love, Vi became her right hand in the operation to find Jinx, and when she promised to end her, she couldn't. So, Caitlyn left her, and Vi was devastated. It was only Jinx herself leading Vi back to a revived Vander that shook her from her sorry state and reunited their little family for the first time in so long. Suddenly, she was right back to the way she was.

Having them all together, being happy despite the ways the world has left them, Vi even considered the possibility of settling down in Viktor's commune. So long as Jinx and Vander were there too. Along the way, she even manages to rekindle her relationship with Caitlyn.

The happiness can't last. The family is broken apart, and soon Vi has to go through the trauma of losing it all again. At least at this point, she has Caitlyn to help her through the pain. A fire-forged relationship, the sort that Vi lives by.

4. What are two major forces in your character’s personality that are often in conflict? (Ex: logic vs emotion, power vs guilt, obedience vs rage, etc.) Logically there's a lot of things Vi shouldn't have done in her life, but that's just not her. Truly, it's Vi's heart that leads her down the paths she takes, for better or worse.

She burned brightly as a kid angry at the world, at Piltover for what they did to Zaun and her parents. She took risks, acted rashly at times. The first time it all blew up in her face was her emotional explosion at Powder for inadvertently killing their friends and Vander. She slapped her little sister, called her a jinx and proved all her feared notions correct. Before she realized her mistake and tried to amend, she was whisked away. Years later, she's still trying to fix her mistakes. Unable to accept the world has moved forward in some ways. Her heart still leads her to taking big risks, even when it looks impossible. Because sometimes it works out.

On the most literal sense of this argument, Vi is a fighter and has been for most of her life. She thinks with her fists and punches with her heart. Most anger she feels is born of worry for others. It's her love that ultimately inspires some good out of others, even if she doesn't mean it at the time. That's what carries her through the day, not silly things like the power of logic. And it's gotten her pretty far.

Why does this Vessel type feel appropriate for your character? Vi's family are a force of nature, and she is no different. She isn't some master tactician, she's a warrior who knows to act first when it matters. She was the fist Caitlyn used during their strike on Zaun, and her main position continues to be on the front line.

Also there's some imagery that's very emblematic of Vi's relation to monsters even though she doesn't get to turn into one herself.
